Search My Heart
Psalm 139:23,24… Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
We heard a message on Sunday from Jason Fitzgerald reading from Psalm 139. It was a very encouraging word for the Lord to search our hearts and if things like pride, bitterness, lust, anger, etc. are found in us, to repent, hand them to God and allow Him to lead us in the way everlasting.
The condition of our heart is so important. It's easy to be fooled into thinking that our heart is in pretty good condition. It says in Luke 6:45 that out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. So many of the things we do and say stem from what is in our heart. We would do well in checking on the condition of our heart regularly. We do that physically, why not spiritually too?
Jesus teaches that God looks deeper than the outside actions of an individual. He searches and ponders the heart. God judges not so much the outside as He does the inside. He looks to the motives, thoughts, and intents of your heart.
I have often pondered that at the end of my life - how will it have impacted other people? That thought of a pebble being thrown into a still pond comes to mind. The ripple effect caused from that small pebble is very evident. Our words and actions throughout our life do not stop when the pebble hits the water. It is our heart condition that determines our words and actions and therefore how we impact the people around us.
Prov 27:19 says “As in water face reflects face, so a man’s heart reveals the man.”
If you are wanting people to see the real you, they only need to look at your heart. Just like when we look at our reflection in the water, we are looking directly at who we are. If someone looked at your heart – what would they see? Would you be happy for them to see the real you?
My prayer is that the condition of our heart receives the ‘all clear’ and that as David sought forgiveness from the Lord, that our cry would be the same as his in Psalm 51:10,11…Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
