Light Of The World

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”  John 8:12

When you are in the dark and shine a torch, you shine it in front of you so that you can see where you are going.  You don’t shine the torch behind you, it is ineffective, there is nothing to follow and you would still be walking into darkness.

Jesus says that He is the ‘light of the world’.  We are all called to follow the light. If we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness! Jesus claimed through His declaration that He is the exclusive source of spiritual light - no other source of spiritual truth is available to mankind.

Even a small amount of light taken into a dark room can dispel the darkness. Without that light, the room would remain in darkness.  The light of Jesus has to be taken into the darkness of sin that engulfs the hearts and lives of those who are not following Him. That’s the condition behind having this light—that we follow Him and spread His spiritual light into the darkness.

It says in Matt 5:14 that …’You are the light of the world.’  We are the light because we have His light living within us. We become reflectors of the true light.  Just as the moon has no light of its own, reflecting the light of the sun, we are called to reflect the Light of Christ so that all can see it in us and believe.

Let me leave you with two questions…

- Is Jesus, the light of the world, evident to others in you and attractive to those around you?

- Are we reflecting the light of Christ in our lives to dispel darkness?

May you be blessed this week as you shine the light of Jesus to others.
